Aim and method

The agreement address food waste by creating a voluntary collaboration between businesses, authorities and organizations in the food supply chain. Participants commit to reducing waste through measurable actions, sharing best practices, and setting targets aligned with Sweden´s environmental food strategies.

Background

The agreement was launched nn March 12 2020, to meet Sweden´s commitments to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 on halving food waste by 2030. It was developed in collaboration between government agencies, industries actors, and IVL to strengthen cooperation across the food chain.

Monitoring and ownership

Monitoring is coordinated by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, with participating organizations reporting data and progress towards waste reduction targets.

Implementation and Results

The agreement has brought together food producers, retailers, restaurants and authorities to implement practical measures such as improved packaging, logistics, redistribution of surplus food, and consumer education. Early results show increased awareness and measurable waste reduction in pilot companies, with continued scaling expected.
