Aim and method

The SG Fresh Produce logos aim to assist consumers in easily identifying local products and encourage them to purchase locally sourced produce, while allowing farmers to promote their products. The logos are certified by the Singapore Food Agency, categorized into a three-star rating. - 1-star means that the farm is a SFA-licensed local farm. Their produce is grown in Singapore and is fresh with a short time and distance from farm to table. - 2-star covers the same criteria as the 1-star, with additional criteria that the farm must be SG Good Agricultural Practice (SG GAP) certified and pass the farm management practices audit. - 3-star covers the same criteria as the 3-star. Additionally, the farm has attained SG Clean and Green (SG C&G) certification, and must be resource and climate resilient. The logos not only represent details on food sources, but also include farm management practices and sustainability aspects of the produce. To start the SG Fresh logos certified procedure, the farms can easily submit applications through the Singapore Food Agency Website.

Background

Singapore is a small country with a total area of 735.7 km². The country has a lack of land and natural resources to produce its own food, and it has heavily relied on importing food from over 180 countries and regions. The imported food accounts for 90 per cent of the food consumed within the country. The country is at high risk of encountering inadequate food in the future due to climate change, and needs to strengthen its own food-producing capacity. So, Singapore has initiated the ‘30 by 30’ vision to enhance its food security by 2030, aiming to develop the capacity and capability of Singapore’s agri-food industry to produce 30 per cent of the nutritional needs sustainably by 2030. Growing and supporting local food is a key in achieving this vision, and the SG Fresh Produce logos were launched in 2022 to support this vision by helping customers to distinguish and denote quality-assured and sustainably-grown local produce.

Monitoring and ownership

The Singapore Food Agency is responsible for making approvals and allowing logo usage. For the 2-star and 3-star that require SG GAP and SG C&G certifications, the Singapore Food Agency collaborates with a SAC-accredited Certification Body to audit and certify the farms. The logo is valid for 2 years, and the farm must submit a new application for logo usage every 2 years.

Implementation and Results

As of September 2025, there are over 40 farms across Singapore with SG Fresh Produce logos certified. These farms vary, including egg, vegetable, fish/seafood, mushroom, vanilla, bean sprout, goat milk, and indoor ginseng farms. The logos make it easier for consumers to support local farmers by buying eggs, fish, and vegetables, and more with the SG Fresh logos. This is an inclusive policy that allows citizens to participate in developing the country’s local and sustainable food system. Meanwhile, the farmers benefit from this policy as they need to improve their farm management systems to meet the GAP and C&G standards before attaining the SG Fresh logos. The farmers are encouraged to improve various sustainability standards on their farms, for example, animal welfare, pesticide usage, water treatment, and waste discharge management, resulting in a better overall environment.
