Aim and method

PRONAF’s main objective is to offer financial and technical aid to small holder farmers with low income through rural credit and technical support (rural extension).

Background

It created to democratize access to rural credit for small farmers who does not produce only commodities and are responsible for 70% of the food consumed by the Brazilian people.

Monitoring and ownership

Multisector Governance, involving the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Farming, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Planning and Budget and the Central Bank; Public hearing of Civil Society Organizations through the Rural Credit Committee of the MDA's CONDRAF (National Council on Sustainable Rural Development).

Implementation and Results

The policy reintegrated smallholder farmers back into the market and guarantees part of their survival strategy. However, it still has many opportunities for improvement, such as better distribution of access throughout Brazilian territory.
