Aim and method

The policy is designed to address the high rates of chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology (CKDu) prevalent in certain regions of Mexico, particularly among agricultural workers. The campaign focuses on increasing access to clean water, educating citizens on hydration, and promoting workplace safety practices in hot climates

Background

: Mexico has seen an alarming rise in CKDu cases, particularly in regions where agricultural labor is intense and access to clean drinking water is limited. Dehydration and heat stress are believed to be significant contributors to CKDu, leading the government to initiate this comprehensive public health response

Monitoring and ownership

The Ministry of Health, along with local health authorities, monitors CKDu incidence rates and oversees educational and workplace initiatives.

Implementation and Results

The campaign has led to improved access to clean drinking water in rural areas, and there have been new regulations mandating breaks and shaded areas for workers in agriculture. Early results show a slight reduction in new CKDu cases in pilot regions
