Aim and method

The policy aims to reduce childhood obesity and non-communicable diseases by promoting healthier eating habits. This is achieved through multiple measures, including: Nutritional warning labels on processed and ultra-processed foods high in sugar, salt, or saturated fats. Restrictions on the advertising of unhealthy foods to children. Promotion of physical activity in schools. Provision of healthier food options in school environments and public institutions.

Background

Rising obesity rates among children prompted the Peruvian government to act. Law 30021 was developed to align with global health recommendations and includes contributions from public health organizations, civil society, and stakeholders from both national and international organizations

Implementation and Results

Since implementation, the law has led to significant changes in product reformulation by food manufacturers to avoid warning labels. Studies have shown reductions in sugar and trans fats in food products and a decrease in sugary beverage sales. However, challenges remain in full compliance and ongoing industry resistance
