This study reviews marketing and behavioral science literature to understand the most effective ways to encourage sustainable consumer behavior. The authors develop a framework, represented by the acronym SHIFT, which outlines five key psychological factors that can influence pro-environmental behaviors: Social influence, Habit formation, Individual self, Feelings and cognition, and Tangibility.
