Aim and method

The program seeks to transform public food procurement by aligning practices with the five core values of the Good Food Purchasing Program: local economies, environmental sustainability, valued workforce, animal welfare, and nutrition. This is achieved by engaging public institutions, conducting research, hosting community forums, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders.

Background

The Good Food Buffalo Coalition launched in 2018 as a grassroots initiative to address systemic food inequities and promote values-based procurement. Inspired by broader food justice movements, the coalition represents diverse community groups and institutions advocating for equitable food systems.

Monitoring and ownership

Monitored by the Good Food Buffalo Coalition, with input from community members, public institutions, and advocacy groups / Participating institutions report on procurement practices, aligning them with coalition goals.

Implementation and Results

Successful community engagement events, including harvest festivals and farmer-legislator forums, policy roundtables have strengthened regional collaboration on food justice issues, local institutions, such as Buffalo Public Schools, are adopting the program’s values and expanding nutrition programs.
