Promotion of nutritional education in schools to foster healthy eating habits

Background

The Promotion of Healthy Eating Policy in Argentina was introduced to address rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related diseases, especially among children. Surveys showed high consumption of sugar, saturated fats, sodium, and calories from ultra-processed foods. The law was developed through collaboration between the Ministries of Health, Education, and Social Development, with guidance from ANMAT and international agencies like WHO and PAHO. Public consultations included input from consumer groups, health experts, and the food industry. The policy aims to improve nutrition transparency, empower consumers, regulate marketing to children, and encourage healthier food choices and product reformulation.

Monitoring and ownership

The Ministry of Health of Argentina is the primary authority overseeing the implementation and enforcement of the law. Regulatory Support: The National Food Institute (INAL), under the National Administration of Drugs, Foods and Medical Technology (ANMAT), provides technical support and guidelines for compliance.

Implementation and Results

Since its enactment, the Promotion of Healthy Eating Policy in Argentina has been gradually implemented across the country. Front-of-pack warning labels indicating high levels of sugar, saturated fats, sodium, and calories have been applied to packaged foods and beverages, while marketing of these products to children has been restricted. Public awareness campaigns and educational programs in schools have accompanied the rollout to help consumers understand the labels and make healthier choices. Early observations indicate increased visibility of nutritional information and shifts in industry practices, including product reformulation to reduce critical nutrients. Challenges remain, such as industry resistance and ensuring comprehension among all population groups, but the policy is expected to contribute to long-term improvements in dietary habits and public health outcomes.
