Aim and method

The challenge aims to: Accelerate and scale up innovative solutions that prevent, reduce, or divert food waste. Method: It provides funding prizes to businesses or organization and innovators who create solutions for different parts of the food supply chain. It reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money and improve food security.

Background

The program was launched under the Canada`s Food Policy in 2019 in response to the high levels of food waste in the country. It was developed with partners across agriculture, industry, technology and community organizations.

Monitoring and ownership

It is monitored and managed by Impact Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, with expert panels reviewing progress and results.

Implementation and Results

It has founded and supported various projects, including shell-life extension technologies, redistribution platforms, and upcycling solutions. It has already shown measurable results in reducing food waste and greenhouse gas emissions, with winners selected in different streams. Long-term success depends on scaling the innovations nationally.
